Day 4

With us being in the quiet south, we thought the best way to get around was by renting a car for a few days. Before breakfast we called to register our interest and shortly after, we were told to be ready at 10.15am to be picked up. We were taken to Punta Prima for the big reveal of what car we would be getting!

Despite offers of fast Citroen cars and normal Peugeot cars, Anna had her sights set on the red Fiat tucked away in the corner. It hadn’t been cleaned yet but the manager knew Anna wouldn’t take no for an answer, put on her hat and gave it a quick 10 minute hoover and wash.

Something has to be said about the efficiency, or rather the lack or safeguarding, of foreign rental car businesses - we were back in the hotel by 11am with not much more than a “don’t crash and you’ll be fine” safety demonstration.

Although we planned to catch some rays this morning to top up the tan, Anna’s red raw body had other ideas and rather than watch her sit in the shade as I played in the pool, I suggested we take a road trip and let her heal. Normally it is me that has taken on too much sun and struggling but this time, I’m not far off the golden hash browns I had for breakfast.

Just under an hour away on the other side of the island, we drove to Ciutadella, the former capital of Menorca. We managed to get a parking space despite difficulties translating Anna’s new directions: Left = that way, Right = that way. Straight on = that way. How could you possibly go wrong?

ree

We travelled on foot around Ciutadella, along the harbour and past the Cathedral, through the streets of the old town and along the harbour full of yachts and boats. Again, despite it being peak tourist season, it was still relatively quiet anywhere we looked.

We stopped for lunch before heading back to the hotel, Anna sleeping of course instead of taking the sights in on the way back. She continued this sleeping when we returned so I took this opportunity to get a gin and do some work in the lounge. The trendiest place on the island right now must be Bambu Menorca. A restaurant, drinks terrace and ‘zen garden’ all rolled into a trendy spot by the beach in Binibeca.

This must be where everyone in Menorca must be, the place was packed and if you didn’t book, you weren’t getting in anytime soon. For the Derry ones, it’s a bit like the exchange if it was on the beach and decorated by Anna. We were lucky to get a sofa bed in the garden and evaluated all the fashion as they arrived and left. Not that we could talk, I spilled soy sauce on my shirt with my first bite of our gyozas!

The night ended in a positive, our french soap actors from the drama yesterday appeared to have made up, holding hands and enjoying a drink whilst listening to the sax player (this evening’s entertainment) back at the hotel. A great night for all!
