Day 9 – The end of holibobs

Our last day in Malta was spent reflecting on our adventures of the last week… but it was actually spent by the pool, making sure that we come back nice and brown. I finished a book and Anna nearly finished her 5th chapter as well.

In the evening, we said goodbye to Elmo and dropped him off to the car hire place before having one last hike up the mountain to go for dinner. A rooftop restaurant overlooking Mellieha, Comino and Gozo was where we had our last meal as we watched the sunset one more time, despite it actually being a Thai restaurant.

A 5.30am start would see us leave for the airport towards Bristol for a day trip, before returning home in the evening, where no doubt we will be stuffing our faces with a good old curry from Water Fortune.

As we end another chapter in our adventures, here are some cool facts and our top tips for Malta.

Cool facts:

  1. Every flag pole in Malta has a little blue light on top of it, which are all cumulatively turned on as it gets closer to their festival on 15th August. These aren’t beacons for planes like Anna thought

  2. Anna can fit perfectly in the pool from side to side, toe to finger

  3. Malta has no rivers or forests

  4. The population of Comino is officially 3

  5. Britain ruled Malta until 1963, hence the many red phone boxes

  6. Cisk is the local beer and it’s crap unless really, really cold

  7. Maltese people LOVE their fireworks

Top Tips:

  1. Probably rent a car to view the island in all its beauty (ask for Elmo, he did us proud)

  2. Visit Mellieha and the north for a relaxing and quiet holiday; Valletta, Mdina and Mosta for some culture; St. Julians for a good night and some good restaurants; Gozo for a bit of everything

  3. Bring studs or mouldies to Valletta so you don’t fall

  4. If you go to the Blue Lagoon, go early

  5. Leave a fan on at night (if you have one) as mosquitos can’t fly in wind apparently
