Day 4 – Blue Lagoon

Today we visit the island which brought us here in the first place – ‘Comino’, famous for it’s clear blue waters and nothing else really. The day got off to a flying start with Anna dropping my toothbrush down the toilet so it was all uphill from here I thought.

The locals recommend that you get the earliest boat to Comino as you can to avoid the huge number of tourists that flock in the afternoon. We agreed and got the 8.30am boat despite it not even leaving until 9am. Nevertheless, there were less than 50 of us in the first hour and we managed to swim and explore the caves without too much bumping into people.

If you’re planning to spend the day sunbathing here I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are keen to lie on sharp stones and rock, as there is no beach. You should definitely try a cocktail in a pineapple though, for the novelty if nothing else!

Anna found that Blue Lagoon was quite similar to the late Lisnagelvin Swimming Pool on a Friday afternoon. Both were full of people and had big waves every so often but Comino was significantly cleaner, and we didn’t have to leave the water every 20 minutes because a little kid had forgotten to clench and keep it in…

The number of people overtook the number of jellyfish in the water so we decided to explore this uninhabited island (deserted except for 1 hotel and a few camping spots) and hike to another bay at the other side. Having done my research, obviously, I was on the look out for a secret indoor pool hidden in one of the caves.

“How do girls always look so good on holidays?” Anna asked herself. She admired how other girls still had perfect hair after a swim, she questioned how they could be bothered to apply make up to go swimming and how they all wore these glamorous outfits. Then she realised she was much comfier in nappy like shorts, my oversized t-shirt, and no underwear on, rubbing on her medium-rare skin. Nevertheless, I admired her mosquito-bitten skin and rugged good looks.

With the sweat dripping down our faces and our feet sore from climbing over rocks that could only be described as the same type of rock that Frodo and Sam walked over on the way to Mordor, we threw in the towel and took refuge at a nice inland pool. After our lunch and some paddling, 3 people emerged from a cave right beside us. It was under our nose the whole time!!

We entered the cave and found our indoor pool. Following the cave system, we eventually came out at an even bigger cave in the cliffs. The crystal clear water and the sunlight streaming through made all the hiking worth it!

Our journey back to Malta was a stressful one as the boats were as disorganised as ever, our driver wasn’t even qualified, jumping out from his seat when he spotted the police, and we were getting hungry. This was fixed by a nice oven pizza by our pool when we got back.

Hectic
We visited St. Paul’s Bay for dinner that evening by the harbour. This was after we held up 20 cars asking for directions as there was some sort of carnival on and most of the roads were closed. A delicious meal, perfect sunset and beautiful company…said Anna.
