Day 3 – Popeye

With the sun rising and the temperature increasing, Anna made breakfast whilst I applied my suncream. It was then that I realised my mistake. Instead of putting on some aftersun moisturiser last night, I had actually put on even more suncream at 9pm, at least I wouldn’t get burnt in my sleep.
Our rental car arrived shortly before 10am and we were greeted by a Maltese local, with a Scottish accent. He handed over our new Hyundai I10 – called Elmo – and as soon as he was gone, we were cruising down the road towards our first destination. Much to Anna’s dismay, I was fitting in and driving like a local.

Popeye Village is a ‘theme park’ film set where Popeye was once set. For €17, you don’t really get much…it’s more of a walking museum, a 7 hole mini-putt course where if you putt the ball it get’s stuck under the green and waterslides that you can barely climb on if you are aged over 6. However, you do get a free popcorn cone and a free boat ride to literally nowhere for 15 minutes.

Despite the hundreds of ‘Beware: Enter at your own risk’ signs dotted around the place, it was probably the safest place we’ve ever been, some of the doors even had door protectors! Maybe swerve this place unless you’re really intrigued.

The ‘Red Tower’ lookout post that overlooks most of the north part of the island was closed for renovations of course, just our luck as usual, although we did manage to pinpoint our next beach. It was lunchtime though and because we now had Elmo, we nipped back to eat at home, and avoid the hottest part of the day.

After a chilled lunch and dip in the pool, Anna started her new book, reached 12 pages and fell asleep. Not sure if that’s to do with Anna or the author.

Our evening drive to Little Armier Bay was an unsuccessful one, the beaches and surrounding areas weren’t the nicest places in the island, but we did go off road and find the hidden ‘Coral Lagoon’ which was just a big hole in the ground. It’s nearly a 20minute swim out of the hole if you jump in so we chose to stay dry for now, and Anna even made a friend, taking pictures for a lonely traveller.

Dinner on our balcony was interrupted by fireworks. Last night Anna had said the only thing missing was some fireworks at sunset and tonight she got her wish, after a few phone calls from me of course 😉
