Day 11

By the time I had woken up, feeling very fresh might I add, Louis had fixed the air con which was leaking on the balcony, written the blog and enjoyed the rest of the leftover pizza on the balcony over looking the waves below.

Before hitting the road to drive to Balos Bay, I stopped by a cafe to get some freshly squeezed orange juice. Cured! Balos Lagoon is described as a turquoise paradise, located on the northwest of the island. Princess Diana and Prince Charles also visited this beach on their honeymoon so it was a must!

The journey was a bit of a trek. We had to drive 8km on an extremely bumpy dirt road up mountains. Louis kept worrying about bursting his tyre… I on the other hand enjoyed the views and looked out for the goats. Once we eventually arrived we then had to walk for half an hour down a pathway to the beach. This wasn’t too bad but last nights antics started to catch up on me so before finding an area to lay down our towels, I had to take a minute in the shade and down a bottle of water.

Unfortunately there were no beds or umbrellas left when we arrived, so our only option was to set up camp near the water on the sand. I’ve came to the conclusion that suncream causes my prickly heat. It must block my pores or something as whenever I don’t put it on it doesn’t flair up. This however isn’t ideal when you’re in direct sunlight, no shade and it’s 40 degrees.

We stayed for a couple of hours but I didn’t want to get burnt so after a final swim and paddle, we started our hike back uphill. I honestly thought I wasn’t going to make it. The heat, the muscle burn on my legs, the sweat that made my sunglasses slip off every 2 minutes, let’s just say it wasn’t my favourite part of our trip but the lagoon and water really was amazing. I must give a shoutout to all those who did this carrying 2 children, a picnic basket, umbrella, buckets, spades… the list goes on. I dunno how they did it. Fair play.

Eventually we made it back to the car where it took me about an hour to eventually cool off. All air con fans pointing at different parts of my body. On our way to get a late lunch, Jerry, you all know him by now, clearly loved his mention so much he wanted another. He ‘accidentally’ bum called us. Wee chancer. Anyway, for lunch we stopped for 2 veggie gyros. Louis devoured his giant wrap and half of my normal sized one. Training is in full swing for the big pizza challenge!

I slept for the rest of the journey home. Louis wasn’t too impressed when I said ‘oh watch that car’ when I woke. He had apparently spent the past hour dodging crazy greek drivers and motorbikes. At least I was well rested.

For dinner we headed towards the harbour again to an Italian restaurant. They had my favourite starter – mozzarella and tomato drizzled in pesto. For dessert, Louis ordered “affogato” which is one of his favourites. Ice cream with a shot of coffee. The waitress didn’t understand him though as on the menu it wasn’t called affogato. They were impressed with his Italian knowledge. Luigi Fields.

Before heading back to the bar beneath the apartment, we stopped for a pint in the Irish bar. It would have been rude not to. Louis enjoyed his Guinness, for €6 he bloody better had.

The bar below us have board games to use while you sip on your drinks – beer, cider & raki for us. Louis taught me how to play chess, in preparation for our own chess set which Andrew Hemmings, Louis’ glasgow friend kindly gave us as a wedding gift. I was a quick learner, of course… All that brain power though made me sleepy. Time for some beauty sleep.
