Day 2 – Rome

It rained all night and the acoustics in the church meant we could hear every droplet bounce off the roof, just like it is when you’re staying down in Donegal during the 2 week ‘summer heatwave’. The light shining in through the window above the altar directly into my eyes also wasn’t so welcome. It kind of felt like I had died and gone to heaven. Slightly surreal but also very annoying when I was trying to sleep.
We left our room and headed towards the Colosseum in the morning. Louis managed to mess up our route so we had to take the scenic route, at least it got my step count up as since the wedding, I’ve naturally got a bit ‘juicer’ and during my time in Rome, I’m not planning on holding back. As we have been in Rome before and already visited the Colosseum, we decided not to actually go into it again. After all, the outside has the wow factor. Instead, we enjoyed the view and the muffin and hot chocolate for breakfast equally.
We visited Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II, which again, is more impressive from the outside. Not gonna lie, I didn’t actually pick up on what it is, but it has lovely marble floors and a tomb of an unknown soldier, which I don’t really get. Surely they can just do some DNA tests on the body and find out? Anyway, for anymore information on it, google it. Nice views from the top though!
My feet were killing me, but I knew that the sooner I got all the sightseeing done with, the sooner I’d get to rest up with a bowl of pasta and a glass of Prosecco. They always seem to cure them. We stopped by the Spanish steps and headed towards Piazza Novona. The last time we were here, there was an amazing artist in the Piazza and we said that when we next returned we would get a piece of art and bring it home. Unfortunately, the markets weren’t set up this time so no artwork for us.
For lunch, we enjoyed some pizza in a restaurant just by the Piazza. Just as we sat down it started to rain very heavily. The warmth from the heater was very welcoming, so welcoming in fact we just had to stay there until we knew it was dry and safe outside.
On our way home, we called into a local supermarket to buy some wine for the room. Now the rain had stopped, I slept and enjoyed a quick siesta while Louis got started with yesterday’s blog. It’s tough life being an influencer and blogger you know.
For dinner, we headed to a restaurant called Senza Fondo. For €20 you can enjoy endless amounts of traditional Italian dishes. When we arrived there was no one in the place. At first we aborted mission but Louis had prepped himself for the challenge so we decided to stick with our original plan. Shortly after, the restaurant filled up and I ate my 4th pasta dish with pride knowing I had helped with tonight’s success of the restaurant. Always be a leader, not a follower. Goodness I’m so inspirational.
Between us, we managed to polish off bruschetta, 3 mozzarella and rice balls, 2 pizzas, 4 pastas, a chickpea and pasta soup and a bottle of vino. Not too shabby, or at all attractive but hey, ‘when in Rome’.
